House of Fusion has used CFUNITED to launch a new technical journal on ColdFusion, the Fusion Authority Quarterly Update. The inaugural issue contains article by Raymond Camden on Application.cfc and how it should be used, Matt Woodward on Flash forms, and Joe Rinehart on the new Model-Glue:Unity. There's lots more, too. This is well worth taking a look at.

Day one of CFUNITED is winding down (aside from what I suspect will be a long evening of hanging out at the bar). Michael Smith and crew have outdone themselves once again, with over 900 attendees (over a 1000 including staff and exhibitors). This morning's keynote went very well. I presented ColdFusion powered Flex, demonstrating the Flex Builder ColdFusion wizards and a Flex Data Services example. I also reviewed pricing and deployment options, and the assembled were ecstatic when they heard what the final pricing is. Next came Jason Delmore, ColdFusion's new Product Manager, who talked a bit about "Scorpio", and demonstrated examples of ColdFusion integration with PDF forms and ColdFusion generated Breeze content. And then we introduced ColdFusion's new Product Marketing Manager, our very own Tim Buntel, dragged back in from semi-retirement-kind-of. The rest of the day has been a blur of customer chats and meetings. Flex 2 is definitely a big deal, as is the relief at seeing Adobe still committed to ColdFusion. (I am not going to say "I told you so", but ...). And now it's time to head downstairs to that bar ...

It's been two years since Macromedia first released Flex, giving us a glimpse of what the future of web application development could (and should) look like. During this time Flex has been successfully deployed in a variety of organizations, both public and private. The highest profile Flex deployment to date is obviously Yahoo! Maps, which is built using Flex 1.5. And now Adobe Flex 2 has arrived, adding lots more functionality, and making Flex far more accessible to developers everywhere. What does this mean for us ColdFusion developers? This Dev Center article explains.
The wait is over! Flex 2 has just been released, and that includes Flex Builder 2, Flex Data Services 2, and the ColdFusion 7.0.2 update. To learn more about Flex 2 visit the Flex Developer Center. Also visit Flex.org for Flex technical and support resources (from both Adobe and the developer community).

Getting to D.C. took a long time today. Actually, I don't think it has ever taken me longer to get here than it did today! But I am here, and am hidden away working on my CFUNITED keynote. More to follow.

SqueezePlay is a real time compression engine for IIS, capable of achieving as much as 10 to 1 reduction in data size. SqueezePlay requires Windows and IIS4 or later, and will compress HTML, XML, JavaScript, GIF, JPEG, PNG, and even PDF files. And the new SqueezePlay 2 also supports ColdFusion. I'm not quite sure what "Support for Cold Fusion applications" means, I'd have thought that if it runs at the IIS level then any app served by IIS would be supported, but, still, if bandwidth costs are an issue this may well be worth a look at. Free 30 day evaluation version is available.

The first public beta of Model-Glue:Unity is available for download. It has many of the same capabilities as Ruby on Rails and ColdFusion on Wheels, as well as:
- Automatic record validation.
- Allows implicit invocation, where one event can fire multiple controller methods, instead of a single page mapping directly to one controller mapping.
- No need to learn pluralization rules.
- Separation of labels and messages into XML files for internationalization.
- Customizable "scaffolds" via XSL.
- Pluggable framework via ColdSpring.
- And more.
Joe Rinehart has blogged details, and also posted a YouTube video of using it to create a blog. And talking about Joe and Model-Glue, he'll be presenting ColdFusion and Model-Glue at an Adobe Developer Week session tomorrow, and there are still a few attendee slots left. If you want to learn more about Model-Glue, don't miss this opportunity.

The New York Times is running a story about a ring tone that can be heard by kids, but not by adults. As per the story, most adults suffer from presbycusis, aging of the ear. And as a result, the older you get the less likely you are to hear sounds at higher frequencies. Which means that kids can now use a ring tone that their folks won't hear (I don't know if that's a really good thing, or really scary). There is a link on the page to an MP3 of the ring tone, but I don't know if it's for real as I can't hear anything when I play it! :-(

As per the press release, "McAfee, Inc. ... today announced that Foundstone Professional Services will launch a series of free tools that teach developers, programmers, architects and security professionals how to create more secure software. The tools will also review the root causes of increasingly prolific crimes such as e-shoplifting, session hi-jacking and identity theft." The tools take the form of actual applications written in a variety of languages and platforms, so as to "replicate interconnected real-world application scenarios including travel, banking and shipping, each written in a different programming language, to demonstrate the potential cross-platform risks to a business' own applications, and those they are connected to." One of the apps, Hacme Shipping, is a "Web based shipping application written in ColdFusion MX7, using the Model-Glue framework and MySQL database." It's good to see ColdFusion recognized as a legitimate platform, along with the others to be included.

Hello from Mexico City. It's been a few years since I was last here, and I'm glad to be back in this huge, vibrant, hectic, energetic, intense, fun city. I am writing this while looking out of my hotel window over beautiful historic Chapultepec Park (last time I was here I got the opportunity to tour it briefly), and have a view of one of the banderas monumentales (absolutely gigantic Mexican flags scattered throughout the country, this one is approximately 150' by 75', I am on the 21st floor and am looking up at it!). I'm here for three days of ColdFusion and Flex related events, and will also get the opportunity to speak to the Adobe User Group Mexico tomorrow night. The event is at the JW Marriott in Polanco, and details are on the group site. I hope to see you there!
