American Express Math Woes

I tried paying my Corporate American Express bill online. The online form told me that the amount due was $2,420.53 (prefilling the box with that exact value), so I selected that balance and authorized payment. When I submitted the form I received the following error:

Error: The amount you attempted to pay exceeds the Total Outstanding Balance of 2420.5299999999997. Please reenter a payment amount that does not exceed this value.

Well, ok then!

Ben,

Will you post your itemized bill for us to check out?

:)

Hehe.... don't you just love quality code behind your online banking! :)

I wonder why a CC company would not accept an overpayment? It protects them against next month's debt, they get to 'use' the money for a month and there's no interest to pay on it.

... I wonder if it gives different results if you use a different browser.... ;-)

Wonder if they have never seen the Round() function before... or is this one of those times we should be trying to siphon off all the .00000000003 of a cent?

I've done some heavy Web Service integration work with American Express, and this is 100% consistent with how well that went. Being the first customer for one of their new service corporate integrations offerings was fun - the WSDL wasn't even valid!

[the previous comment had some really atrocious grammar that I can't leave alone]

"one of their new corporate integration service offerings"

So now you will always owe them just under a cent - LOL
Reminds me of a story where a guy received a final utility bill after he moved for $0.00. He ignored it, since he didn't owe anything apparently, and then started getting collection notices, etc. After making a number of calls, he eventually had to send them a check for $0.00, which resolved it.

Who knows if this is an urban legend type story, but I found it amusing.
